Government under mounting pressure to publish trans guidance

The Equality and Human Rights Commission submitted the guidance four months ago but the government said it still needed time to assess it properly.

Su Wong, from the group SEEN in Sport, which campaigns to keep women’s sports single sex, said: “It should be a matter of urgency that the new EHRC guidance is presented to parliament. The Supreme Court judges were unanimous and the EHRC, both the previous chair and the current chair, is unequivocal.

Transgender footballer flouts FA ban by playing for female side

Inclusion of player by West Yorkshire Whippets raises serious questions about whether rule change is being properly enforced.

“This is not about one player. It is about defending the rights of all of the women in the entire league. While some may consent to playing mixed-sex sports, they cannot override the consent of others by flouting @FA policy and the law.”

Football’s ban on transgender women draws strong reaction

Campaign group Seen In Sport have welcomed the ban. “We can have a lot of sympathy for those people who have been lied to, but we should also remember there should be compassion for the women and girls who’ve had their rightful places taken, who’ve lost medals, prize money,” Su Wong, a spokesperson, told talkSPORT.

“There is actually a simple solution. Sport is already inclusive. The women’s category, if you protect that, that includes the women, and for everyone else, they are included already. Nobody has a right to identify into a different sports category.”

Sports, schools and single-sex services: what ruling on women really means

Campaigners for single sex sport said that the judgement has made it “crystal clear” that males who identify as female — with or without a GRC — are not permitted in women’s sports.

Su Wong, from the campaign group Seen in Sport, said: “This applies to all women and girls, not just at elite level, so this should mark the end of ‘two-tier’ sports policies. This ruling means that women will no longer be sanctioned and punished if they raise concerns that there is a male in the female category.

“Sports governing bodies need to quickly update their guidance policies to ensure that they are compliant with the law. If a sports category is labelled as female but a club, organisation or sports governing body allows males in the women’s category, then they will open themselves up to a legal challenge, which they will not win.”

Pool bans trans women from female category after Supreme Court decision

Ultimate Pool Group is the first sport governing body since the ‘clarification’ to restrict its female category to biological women.

“Su Wong, a spokeswoman for SEENinSport, which campaigns for women’s sport to be restricted to biological females, said: “I think we are very much reaching a tipping point. I know some major sports governing bodies have been having crisis meetings or commissioning urgent legal advice on what to do.

“Sporting bodies that do not protect the women’s category are 100 per cent categorically, without a doubt, opening themselves up to discrimination claims. Who wants to be the last sport to restore fairness and safety to women?”
